How do i learn my streets and stuff ?

i am 20 years old , still living with my parents , they have oveprotected me so much that i dont go around the neighborhood much , and i wanna learn my streets cause when my boyfriend comes to visit me , i make myself look like like a fool and i don't know how to give him directions to places , how embarrassing is that >>?? can anyone help me , please ? what are blvds etc . i would really appreciate it if you guys would help me . thanks .. i live in the Fernando valley if that helps .
